The use of marijuana for medical treatment for the chronically ill or critically ill patients has stirred much controversy over the years. Recreational use, but also for the treatment of ailments and diseases. The reality of this ban especially for medical use is not backed by facts but by politics and special interest groups mostly implying to the pharmaceutical industry.

Medical marijuana has been proven to help many sick people including patients who suffer from different stages and forms of cancer. The biggest benefits of recreational dispensaries for the sick are the abilities to overcome severe nausea caused by chemotherapy and the disease itself. Marijuana also helps with diseases such as Aids, HIV, and Cancer by helping improve appetite and the ability for the patient to intake more food and nutrients key to their survival. Marijuana may also aid and benefit people with chronic pain, muscle spasms, depression, brain cancer, anxiety and many other ailments.

Now that we know a little bit of how medical marijuana helps patients, one must ask oneself is, “why does it seems like such a bad thing by so many people?” The problem is typical of a political and special interest problem where a positive solution is made and conjured up to seem bad for sole purpose of political gains or monetary gains. The image most people envision is a pothead smoking away and abusing the drug for a high. People do not picture a sickly women suffering from breast cancer and getting treatment from a drug with low side effects and causes minimal damage. The reason is that politicians in order to appease people’s ignorance of medical marijuana and get more votes cast stones against the use of marijuana for medical purposes as a bad thing that is there to lure our children to get hooked onto drugs. In the meantime the pharmaceutical industry afraid that their expensive drugs will be replaced by inexpensive medical marijuana lines the pockets of these politicians to prevent the usage and passage of medical marijuana laws.

Another fair question is why smoke marijuana while there are plenty of other drugs to help with many of the same ailments. If you ask this question you fall into a trap. Why do you want people to be on heavier and much more dangerous drugs that can kill people if overdosed by accident or over prescribed? These alternative drugs are much more harmful and addictive than marijuana can ever be. They are sometimes the medical version of cocaine, heroin, oxycotin, and so on. Why would you think it is better to treat someone with those drugs than with marijuana? The answer is you should not. If marijuana can in fact help patients with their ailments then it should be prescribed. Not only can be just as effective as synthesized drugs but it can actually work better than a lot of drugs. Not only that but in a time where we are trying to save on health care and solve our health care cost issues it would be wiser to prescribe a natural plant over expensive drugs that can cost all of us thousands of dollars a month.

In closing the controversy about medical marijuana is much to do about politics and special interest groups than it has to do with really helping and treating people with the best possible care and to give people safer alternatives to dangerous and addictive pharmaceuticals. The deeper we look into the medical marijuana controversy the more we realize that one of biggest drug problems can actually be a solution.
